Getting The Most From Acupuncture

Getting The Most From Acupuncture

When it comes to acupuncture, you may be wondering how to prepare for your appointment. In this blog, I’ll provide you with basics such as what to wear, what to drink, whether to eat before or after, how much time to set aside, and other essential things you should know before undergoing acupuncture.

Top tips for before you undergo acupuncture

In this article, we’ll discuss tips on having the most comfortable and beneficial acupuncture treatments. I personally think that preparing for your acupuncture treatment is the key to feeling relaxed and comfortable and getting the most out of your acupuncture treatment.

Before your appointment

It’s best to come to your appointment with a relaxed body and mind. Try not to schedule any appointments before or after your acupuncture appointment, especially those that are strenuous. It’s also a good idea to make sure you leave some time for yourself to relax during your treatment without feeling rushed.

What to wear

Wear a comfortable and loose outfit or bring gym clothing to change into. Often, the practitioner will need to manipulate various body parts and might need you to roll up your shirt sleeve or trousers, which can be difficult if you are wearing a tight-fitting outfit.

What to eat

While its important to refuel, it’s also important to avoid feeling too full during your session. Avoiding overeating before treatments is crucial because you want to be nourished but not actively digesting a heavy meal while undergoing acupuncture.

Stay hydrated before treatment

Staying hydrated is essential at all points in your life. Not only will it help with acupuncture, it will help with your overall general well being. Before and after your acupuncture treatment, it’s important to stay hydrated. Drinking water before and after your therapy helps flush out any toxins.

Can I drink coffee before acupuncture?

Avoid coffee and tea, as well as energy drinks that have caffeine. These products will affect your body’s nervous system and can have a negative effect on acupuncture treatment. They also cause dehydration in the body, so it’s best to avoid these products after acupuncture treatments. I would recommend increasing your water intake.

Can you drink alcohol before acupuncture?

It’s best to avoid alcohol when coming up to your acupuncture treatment session; this is especially true on the day of the treatment. Some people are more sensitive to or experience adverse reactions to alcohol following acupuncture treatments.

What to expect during treatment

Depending on the diagnosis and complexity of the treatment, a new patient usually spends about 30-60 minutes with their acupuncturist, firstly discussing the problems they are experiencing and what they hope to achieve from acupuncture, and then undergoing the acupuncture treatment. Returning patients usually spend about 15-30 minutes. On average, you can expect to spend 20-30 minutes on the table.

Acupuncture uses needles that are about the size of a few strands of hair. The needles are relatively painless, but you may feel a slight itching sensation when they are first inserted.

After the treatment

Acupuncture works differently for everybody, and there are mixed reviews about how people feel after a treatment. Many people have reported feeling better emotionally and physically when having acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture has also been known to improve the way you sleep and help conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome, it can even dull some of the symptoms of seasonal allergies and decrease your overall stress level.

Relaxation:  Many people that have undergone acupuncture report experiencing a deep sense of peace and relaxation. You might find that you experience difficulty focusing or concentrating afterwards.

Modern research has shown that the body releases higher levels of endorphins after acupuncture treatments, explaining the highly relaxed feeling patients have afterwards. After an acupuncture treatment, the best thing to do for yourself is to rest.

Emotions: Patients experience a number of different emotions during and after their acupuncture treatment. For some, it can be euphoria; for others, it could be the feeling of an emotional release.

Pain Relief: Pain management is one of the fastest-growing fields for acupuncture because it can offer instantaneous results that some people may need. It can take some patients a few treatments before they experience any long-term pain relief after acupuncture treatment. Some patients may have the opposite experience, experiencing a surge of pain relief following the initial treatment.

Giving yourself plenty of time, drinking plenty of water and wearing loose clothing are all important factors to be mindful of when getting acupuncture. A treatment may last around an hour, so remember to leave yourself some extra time if you have a busy schedule. Avoiding coffee, alcohol, and minimising caffeine intake before your appointment can help you feel better during and after the treatment.

If you’re feeling pain, acupuncture can be a great way to help reduce it and relieve stress. Acupuncture can also help to balance emotions, improve sleep, and detoxify your system.
